Dear President Clinton:
Radovan Karadjic proclaims to the world that the Serbs will win "in the
end."
That is probably true, but not quite the way Karadjic means it. The
Serbs who believe in justice, goodness, and peace will win in the end,
and in the end they will bring down Karadjic and all those who have
worked with him.
As for the magnificent Nato air strikes, my friends and I here in Europe
hope you will be given the credit you deserve for your efforts at
helping to bring them about. We suspect those efforts have been even
greater than what the media have reported, and we admire and respect you
for them.
We have also been impressed at the support these efforts have had not
only in the United States, but throughout North America, Europe, and
elsewhere. From Alabama to Ontario, from California to New York, and
from one end of Europe to the other, the Internet has brought us
messages from people whose kindness and intelligence give evidence of
what Anne Frank called the goodness that exists invincibly at the heart
of humankind.
All of us here wish you every continued success. We know that sometimes,
from the White House, it may seem the world is full of critics. You
surely realize, however, that many people who believe in you simply have
not spoken up as much as they should. You've been in politics long
enough to know that practically everyone is ready to tell you that
you've done something wrong. Very few people will tell you that you're
doing things right.
On behalf of all of us who haven't said it before or haven't said it
enough, Mr. President: we think you and the Nato allies are doing things
exactly right in Bosnia.
Sincerely yours,
Robert J. Bennett
